The fantasy sports industry is big business - generating rdaddphp.5 billion annually. Yahoo.com made the addition of fantasy sports to their site in 1999, offering most games free. The Fantasy Sports Trade Association was formed in 1998. Then, in 2001 amid the dot-com crash, one of the major voices in fantasy sports, RotoNews.com's parent company Broadband Sports, went out of business. It mutated and evolved into the now RotoWire.com. With Yahoo.com offering games for free and the competition growing, Commissioner.com began offering its football commissioner services for free in 2000. Ever-evolving, it was only 2 years later when the free trend reversed and pay models became the mode of choice, which has persisted to today. Recent surveys indicate that the average male spends 6.6 hours a week watching NFL on TV, but they also show that fantasy players average 8.4 hours of NFL per week, pointing to a direct correlation between fantasy play and increased TV viewership. This finding has led to increased television ads promoting fantasy football, thus further supporting the fantasy sports world.

Even though baseball, basketball, and football are perhaps the most well known fantasy sports, there are a host of other sports that are also becoming popular in the fantasy world. Since participation in fantasy sports has become such a favorite pastime in recent years, more nontraditional fantasy leagues have sprung up around the world. For example, on an international level, cricket has become a popular fantasy sport. Sites like Cricket Web, Cricketinc.com, and Fantasy Cricket Online are just a few of the places dedicated to fantasy cricket leagues. In the United States, the PGA now offers fantasy leagues on their site (PGA.com) and feature standard league play, salary cap play, and playoff/tournament style play. Hockey is another sport that has been growing in popularity. Today, NHL.com provides the most comprehensive fantasy competitions, news and analysis for those who want to participate in a fantasy hockey league. In addition, there are also lesser known fantasy competitions that have been increasing in popularity over the past few years, including leagues that revolve around collegiate sports, pro wrestling, and even Hollywood (where you pick movies instead of athletes).
